Refreshed Paul Cullnean is set to return to battle Leigh Centurions in Thursday night’s televised tie at the Recreation Ground.

Cullnean was an ever-present for Whitehaven last season, when he was named in the Championship One All-Stars team at 35. But boss Dave Woods opted to leave him out of Sunday’s win at Keighley, in heavy conditions, to keep him fresh to face the Centurions, live on Premier Sports.

“In those conditions I wasn’t sure if he could play both games, so we rested him, but we do need him on Thursday night,” said Woods.

“It’s going to be a tough trip for Leigh, but they have a quality squad. They won’t want to travel all that way and get beat, especially on telly.”

Cullnean touched down last weekend in Haven’s opening home win against York, when fellow front-rower Seb Martins debuted.

The French international looked a little rusty at the Recre, after a spell out of league, in rugby union. But he was much-improved against the Cougars.

“He was a lot better,” added Wood. “We were going to rest him at Keighley but he needs game time under his belt. Those conditions really take it out of your legs.”

Forward Lee Paterson, a try-scorer at Keighley, picked up a chest injury, while playmaker Jamie Rooney limped in to see the physio after the final hooter, with a knock to his shin.

Haven are offering special £30 family tickets, for two adults and two children on Thursday. Plus a special Valentine Night’s event in the sponsors’ lounge at £40 a head.

Included are a pre-match meal with wine and additional drinks, admission to the match, and access to pre and post-game interviews with Woods. This event must be booked by Thursday lunch.

Would like to see Thorman at 6 with Cameron/Ackerley at FB if Rooney not fit, Thorman looks very handy with ball in hand.
