PS People don't get put in jail too be punished, they get jail as punishment.

If anyone believes in extra-judicial punishment ('torture'....'in the showers'...,etc) then I'm sure you won't mind if somebody robs your house or hits you over the head with a baseball bat if they think they have due reason to go over and above the law of the land too.

The massive problems in America with gang crime have been exacerbated by inmates grouping together in super-violent US prisons for mutual protection. It really would be far more sensible in the long run for prisons to be places of reform and rehabilitation - but why let the facts get in the way of a good The Sun-style rant?

George Osbourne is quite right too, to link this case to the welfare state, or the abuse of it.
That deviant monster didn't care about those kids, he just wanted the money and the bigger house, hell, if one woman can't breed quickly enough, then why not employ two?
Its a bit like that other product of the welfare state, Karen Matthews from Dewsbury, that household and that estate shocked the country, and sadly, we all know families like that everywhere, theres enough of them in Runcorn.

Hang on a minute, look a little closely at you Gideon Osborne and he has fiddled the tax payer more than anybody on benefits.

In your world are all lorry drivers like Peter Sutcliffe, GP's like Harold Shipman, or taxi drivers are Derrick Bird's.

Not everyone on benefits is tht scum from derby.  :witch:

I didn't vote Tory last time. I voted UKIP. But if I only had a choice between them or labor they would win.  But at the end of the day 1 party is as bad as the other, labour destroyed the country by allowing mass immigration and creating the current state of the welfare state, and the current mob have done nothing to sort it out!

Dear HAG, don't qite understand your opening sentence re "...to be punished...as punishment" seems to be the same thing ie the person being punished receives a punishment?? However I see a Jail sentence as being A] A punishment for bad behaviour b] A deterent to others and c] A place of help and rehabilitation. In that order. Of course the trouble now is in an increasing environment of profit coming into the system resouces go to company shareholder instead of being use to give people a better chance once they leave prison. And agree with you totally about extra judicial treatment, all wrong but once in prison it does seem prisoners are at the mercy of vindictiveness not only from other prisoners but also from the authorities.
