Leigh Centurions can confirm they have entered a dual registration partnership with Kingstone Press Championship One club Whitehaven RLFC for the 2017 season.
This partnership will run concurrently with the Club’s existing agreement with Championship side Sheffield Eagles.
As part of the arrangement winger David Thompson will be available to play for Whitehaven in their Championship One opener at South Wales on Sunday.
Leigh Centurions owner Derek Beaumont has worked closely with Head Coach Neil Jukes on the partnership. Mr Beaumont said: “With the partnership at Sheffield working well in the early stages we were happy to also add to that to facilitate a game opportunity for where Sheffield weren't in need of any of our players.
“Whitehaven are a club steeped in history and remain our friends from when they were our main competitors in 2004, narrowly losing out to us in extra time for us to claim a place in Super League.
“Unfortunately they have had difficult times to overcome and it is good to see that they are re-building from the Championship One and we hope that we are able to help them do this.
“Dave Thompson is a good young player who came through an excellent set up at Warrington, playing Super League on loan at Hull KR and it is for that reason we brought him to the club to develop him as a player for our future.
“At this stage his chances are limited so this partnership enables us to have him in a competitive game day environment where he can continue to develop and be monitored whilst staying with us as a full time professional.
“Jukesy will work closely with them for the benefit of both parties and as we look to build our squad and reserves side for next year the relationship will naturally be able to grow.”
Amanda Hewer, Whitehaven RLFC General Manager, said: “We are very pleased to announce we have joined up with Leigh Centurions as dual registration partners for the 2017 season.
“Leigh have a lot of depth in their squad and we have suffered immensely during the off season due to injuries and suspensions. This partnership will allow us to cover any shortfall in our squad.
“Leigh are a fantastic club and we are looking forward to working with them during the season. The partnership will begin this weekend against South Wales as winger David Thompson is available to play for us.”

Why do we change DREG every year. Surely benefits us staying with the same club. I know we are short of players but are we really going to get any top players from leigh when they are already with Sheffield. Well come aboard to the player anyway.

Windes wanted a 5 Figure Sum which we obviuosly coundnt afford.

SL cludbs are now using DR to dodge payments and keep under their Salary Cap.

Would be far better off getting in 2 or 3 loan players than DR,as for the Leigh player,he's an out and out winger.

This is a bad idea we already have a big squad and we don't need it.

Don't think wingers are our problem
If anyone's watched our 6 games the lads gonna find out he wont be touching the ball very often
I would have thought a half back or even hooker

Well and Jordan both fancy the No1 jersey so why not sign a winger to cover them. Just hope he enjoys taking in the first and second ball in and getting poor service rest of them time   ;)

Mixed feelings on this.

Dual Reg does nothing for encouraging new local talent to come through.....just helps those teams from away, i.e Leigh, to harden up players and keep them match fit.

Also recognise that if the current squad ain't strong enough then got to look at travellers via DR if Haven are serious about a promotion push.

To me DR will never lead to a self sustaining club and the spiral of player turnover will go on and on and every season the same old same old will happen, most likely with the same outcomes.

So you think DR is a good idea, what ever your told they will have to play meaning some one  who has trained all week will miss out.
This weekend if Taylor and Parker are centers then we have burns,Calvert miller , Patterson and the Leigh player for 3 places ,so who misses out ,it won't be the Leigh player,so some who have done full preseason will miss out on the first league game cause of a last minute arrival
With the halfback back in contention after his head knock then a half will miss out Tyrone ?
So when these players start walking away like in previous seasons ,you know why
All  preseason we were told we would not go down the DR route and would have a big enough squad and plug gaps with loan players .
