Widnes’ Championship match with Sheffield postponed

21st February 2019 Drew Darbyshire

Sunday’s Championship match between Widnes and Sheffield will not go ahead as the Vikings’ financial difficulties continue.

The game was been called off due to issues with player insurance and it’s reported that administrators are not willing to pay the cost of player insurance.

A decision will be made by the RFL as to whether the Eagles will receive the match points or if the game will be rearranged.

A Widnes spokesperson said: “Widnes Vikings can confirm that Sunday’s fixture against Sheffield Eagles has been officially postponed.

“Whilst discussions are ongoing with regards to ensuring the club’s survival, it was felt appropriate to postpone this weekend’s Betfred Championship fixture against Sheffield Eagles, which has been done in conjunction with the Sheffield club.

“Widnes Vikings are grateful for the support of Sheffield on this matter.

“Widnes Vikings will be making no further comment at this stage, and will update supporters as soon as the club can confirm further details.”

All the big earners will be jumping ship then hopefully they'll manage to stay up this season and don't get relegated would make it even harder to get promoted if they get relegated

Like many teams, nice stadium to look at, but costly and doesn't get the fans in.   Should have stayed at Naughton Park.

Warrington ground is the answer.  People want to stand end of story.  Also a lot cheaper to build and maintain.

They never left, the stadium was rebuilt on what was Naughton Park in partnership with Halton Council.

Yeah,Widnes sold it to Halton council in the early 90s when they ran into money troubles, the council rebuilt it in phases with the Vikings having a 40%. stake in the stadium, they then sold the stake to the council when they hit further money troubles.
