Keighley who have run a Reserve team successfully for a while now, have been turned down for the New Reserve league, which means we have no chance of been accepted.

The RFL are trying to kill the lower teams out of the game.

Shortsightedness by the RFL in my opinion. It’s already a travesty that Newcastle (a non heartland area) are holding summer camps  in this area and signing up some of our young amateur talent.
I’m told the RFL’s take is that it will weaken the amateur game in Cumbria. However, a recent U16 game between Newcastle and Wigan had four  Hensingham lads split between the two teams.

Newcastle had 6 West Cumbrian players in their squad for that game against Wigan; 2 from each of Kells, Hensingham and Seaton.

There was at least 2 West Cumbrian missing as their U16s squad has 3 from Seaton & Kells

That’s what we should be actively doing getting best young locals signed up. You can’t blame Thunder for doing what there doing. Clearly there thinking well ahead of the rest

Probably one of the reasons the RFL have rejected our request for a reserve team as they know that would pull the Local (West Cumbria Young Talent) into the Haven set up retaining them in the area and so available for Haven or Town, by this that redirects them to Gateshead who they are really pushing forward for developement and fast tracking
I hope the club ask for reasons as to why they were rejected and what justification
Would still be good for all the Cumbria clubs to come up with some plan to retain the local youngsters even look at the possibility of setting up U19, U16 teams linked to the clubs but playing in the local amateur leagues if possible

The problem is that Newcastle can offer these kids so much more than us or Town can. Not just financially either. Newcastle have a link up with Northumbria University and can pretty much offer these kids a guaranteed university place alongside their rugby development which also includes free accommodation etc. Plus they have access to top class training facilities both at Kingston Park and at the University sports hub.

I understand what you are saying, but that's no excuse for the RFL to refuse our application to run a reserve team

Newcastle can offer a place at Northumbria?  Really?

And what happens (as tends to happen with Thunder) when their financially backing suddenly disappears?

Crowds  of 1000 with heavily discounted prices...

Hunslet win best for us, keeps them interested for their game against Oldham. Oldham beat Newcastle would be a big favour

Oldham beating Newcastle has its problems too, that would bring Oldham to within 2 points of Haven with a superior GD. Saving grace there being Oldham still have to go to Donny and Hunslet.

Have faith in the lads to see out the last 3 games. 17 games gone and we’ve been top/joint top/co joint top more or less all season
