Three members of Whitehaven’s title-winning squad won’t be with the club in the Championship next year.

Haven coach Gary Charlton has paid tribute to the contributions from the departing trio of Jordan Thomson, Kurt Maudling and Ruiari McGoff.

Thomson is currently playing rugby union with Whitehaven but is expected to return to his amateur rugby league roots with Hensingham in the National Conference League next year.

Maudling, a former Cumbria rugby union player who also played for neighbours Workington Town, is also back in the 15-a-side code with St Benedict’s, and could be playing amateur rugby league in 2020.

McGoff, however, has been forced to retire because of persistent injury worries which limited his involvement at the Recreation Ground.

Charlton said: “We would just like to wish all three of them the best of luck for the future because they have been excellent members of the squad.

“The bottom line, particularly with Jordan and Kurt, is that they want to play more games than what they got with us last season.

“The big thing is the commitment and enthusiasm they showed throughout the season and, whenever they were asked, never failed to give 110 per cent in the team.

“Ruarie, who was a Canadian international, had problems with his shoulder and achilles, so had limited opportunities but we thank him for his time at the club.”

Former player/coach Carl Forster, who returned to the club last season after a brief spell as Rochdale coach, has also moved on to play for relegated Barrow in League 1.

Whitehaven have only announced two new signings in Tom Walker and Glenn Riley but are happy with the way talks have been going with current squad members and players from outside the club.

Charlton will be getting his squad together again on November 13 in preparation for the new season.

Thanks to those who have left, last seasons success was down to the whole squad, and the three leaving can be proud of their contribution and support they gave the club.

Looking forward to re=signings and new signings being announced as happening.

Kurt especially put in some big performances when required, quite disappointed he has left.
