I don't take any pleasure in seeing Widnes go into administration. Surely it can't be good for RL .

How are we supposed to compete with teams who spend beyond their means...  If castleford hadn't gone up the same thing would have happened to them.

The whole thing is a farce.  Could someone tell me if there are salary caps outside of super league?????

I think in the long run, it could be good for RL.

It should teach other clubs the lesson about keeping your house in order and looking after the finances.

At the risk of being labelled an arse kisser, this just shows what a good job our board do in keeping the club in the black.  It would be easy to splash money we dont have and sign every decent player that comes along. (Wilkes Nanyn Summers Penny) all went for more money.  The situation at Widnes proves that you need very good gates to be able to survive.

you bloody arse kisser!!!! :-* :-* :-*
LOL
only kidding champ ;)

Official story from BBC website:

"Future bleak for ailing Vikings

Widnes have gone into administration following Sunday's loss to Castleford in the National League 1 Grand Final.
The club's board took the decision after meeting on Monday to discuss the financial crisis at Halton Stadium.

"It's a very sad time for all concerned within the club," said chief executive Peter Barrow in a statement.

Barrow is hopeful a buyer will be found and says several board members intend to "put together a package to take the club forward into 2008 and beyond".

Widnes missed out on promotion to Super League when they lost 42-10 to Castleford at Headingley.

Their future was thrown into some doubt earlier in the year when chairman Stephen Vaughan stepped down and offered to sell his shares.

The four remaining directors put ?150,000 into the club to see it through to the end of the season but decided to call in the administrator in a bid to prevent it being wound up.

In June both Doncaster and Swinton were deducted six points after going into administration and breaching the Rugby Football League's insolvency rules, and Widnes may face a similar penalty with effect from next season.

Club officials are to meet with the RFL this week to discuss the situation."

there should be no MAY FACE A SIMILAR PENALTY as donny and swinton, they should damn well be docked 6 points from the start of next season!

I think what widness did was on a bigger scale than what doncaster did... a clear message should be sent out and they should be dropped down an league... and never mind retrospectively taking 6 points of them ... they should be stripped of any honours that they have won all season!!!!!!

Castleford finances should be thoroughly investigated as well.

A joke... whats to stop salford (and anyon else) putting their clubs future on the line next season?

Widnes are in administration, they still exist, and there are a number of consortia currently talking to administrators regarding purchasing the club, including the existing directors.

I believe that the current major shareholder, well before we went in to administrator, wouldnt negotiate the sale of the club to the remaining directors. But now the club is in the control of the administrators, these directors can make a bid.

All the squad will no doubt be leaving though.

Now here is a question the Rugby League MUST answer.  How on earth did Widnes meet the criteria for entry to Super duper league.  Lets all e-mail Mr Woods and company for the answer.

thing is tho bkm, if windows had won the GF they would have gone to SL, around which their business plan would have been based, so when they put it the RFL it would have looked good, ie up to SL more money from SKY and crowds going up etc, but they wouldnt have had to show them what their plans were if they didnt get to SL, so the RFL probably didn't know that this would happen to them.

at the end of the day tho, who really gives a flying fig about them?
