It's on now and Donny's strip is very similar to Haven's.   There must be something about that in finals, don't you think!!!!

2008 Northern Rail Cup Final at Bloomfield Road [Blackpool]

Live on

DONCASTER 0 v 60 SALFORD CITY REDS

KO: 14:45.

Salford City Reds collected Rugby League's first major trophy of the season with a 10-try demolition of Doncaster in the 2008 Northern Rail Cup final at Blackpool.

And the Reds must be hoping that history will repeat itself. In 2003, they won this competition in a previous sponsorship, and went on to be promoted to Super League.

Following their relegation at the end of the 2007 season, the Reds found themselves back in the National League, and they will be hoping that this impressive victory will put the finishing touches to a successful application for a licence in the revamped 2009 engage Super League.

The RFL is due to announce which of the 19 applicant clubs are going to be given one of the 14 licences for next year's elite competition on July 22.

Co-operative National League Two club Doncaster, who were making their first appearance in a Cup final, were overwhelmed by the National League One leaders Salford.

The South Yorkshire team performed courageously, but they laboured to break down the well-organised Salford defence, while also finding the Reds' pace and power in attack impossible to counter.

There was little Doncaster head coach Ellery Hanley could do to protect his players as Salford's stars ripped them apart with powerful running and dextrous handling at pace.

In real terms, Doncaster's final was over at half-time when they trailed 24-0. Two tries from mercurial Salford scrum-half Richard Myler - who was later named man--of-the-match - added to touchdowns by Karl Fitzpatrick and Craig Stapleton, all of which were converted by centre John Wilshire, saw the City Reds firmly in charge of the final.

The second half simply served to underline the huge difference in class and ability between the full-time professionals of Salford and the part-timers of Doncaster.

While the Dons continued to labour with courage and diligence, they lacked the craft to unlock the stone wall that was the Salford defence.

The Reds steamrolled their way to their trophy with six second-half tries. Winger Paul White claimed a hat-trick and the remainder came from Ian Sibbit, Adam Sidlow and Robbie Paul.

Wilshire completed his 10 from 10 attempts haul by landing six more conversions.

Ealier in the day thousands of Reds fans had made their way to the coast for the game, including 600 travelling on a special train laid on by the club.
