Excellent Blog Entry

I urge you all to read my close friend James Gordon's latest blog entry over at http://www.thesportreport.co.uk/

In my eyes it is an excellent summary of where rugby league is really at. Certainly plenty of talking points in it

For us, Whitehaven are the St Helens of this league. We will never ever ever win up there again. We might as well chalk this one off every year - in fact - why bother taking up the first team? Chuck the youngsters on because it's a dead rubber as far as our club is concerned.

James Gordon says everything I feel and wish I could detail so eloquently.

Only problem is there is no coordinated vehicle the fans can attach themselves too to hold the RL governing body to account for the mess they are making.

These people are tightly in bed with Sky sports, so when you switch the TV on to watch our beloved sport, all you get is the RL and Sky party line, that being that everythings OK and all of the crap decisions and daft ideas that Lewis and his bunch of cronies come up with are for the betterment of RL and actually working.

Bunch of absolute dopes with their heads up each others ar*ses if anyone wants my humble opinion.

I for one am certain that RL is on a massive slide in the UK, with no hope of stopping it while the above dopes and their Sky masters are playing roulette with our wonderful game.

Trouble is if its all so bad, why are crowds in S/L at record levels ? why do some think that we should have a Cumbria side to be part of S/L ?
Are Cas now complaining its all rubbish?
And lets face it when Widnes get in S/L they wont care about National leagues either, Just like we wouldnt if we were getting a huge handout and playing the big teams every week.
You cant blame S/L for failing in the world cup, we have hardly beat the aussies for last 30 years ,they better because they have a far larger playing base than us,we still a minority sport here and always will be.
Yes there are things i dont like and fully agree with some of the blog comments, points systems and french teams etc.
But at same time S/l has improved stadia etc and introduced lots of new fans to the game it isnt all bad!

We often hear the same story of how crowds have increased in rugby league but is that really the case?    Are crowds any larger now than they were say 25 years ago?

Yes, maybe SL crowds have grown but are they new followers of the game or just many disillusioned followers of lower league clubs changing allegiance to a SL club?    I don't know the actual figures but I would hazard a guess that the total attendances today are not much more than 25 years ago, if at all.

"The recently completed Co-operative National League One campaign has been the best supported season at this level of Rugby League for 11 years.
The average attendance at the completion of the 18 round Regular season is 2,205 supporters per game per week.
That is the highest average attendance at this level of the sport since 1997 and represents an increase of almost 10 per cent on last year’s figure which was also a record (last season's average at the end of the season was 2,074 per game per week)."

May be same as 25 years ago...but doesnt seem like people are fed up if crowds are increasing ??

Also in S/L Huddersfield Giants have averaged over 7,000 for the first time since the 1957/58 season. Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have recorded their best average attendances in the Super League era and have seen their average crowd increase by 90 per cent over the last four years

Cant say they all coming from lower league clubs ???

I don't know any exact figures for 25 years ago, but I know that in the mid 80-s Barrow were the 4th or 5th best supported club in Division 1 (SL equivelant of it's day).  We averaged 4,200.  Super League is drawing average crowds larger than has been seen since at least the 60's.

However, the figures for NL1 are very misleading.  If you take Widnes and Salford out of last seasons average (2,205), you're probably looking at less than 1,500 average.  Of the Salford and Widnes games, there were a fair few freebies or televised games which always bump attendances.  NL2 crowds were well down in 2008 compared to 2007.

It's all in the spin.

Thats quite true, But then Cas have been included in previous years  with averages of way more than Salford ! Cas averaging about 5000.
Of course teams have ups and downs, we averaging 2300 3 years ago, But the slide hasnt got anything to do with the format of National leagues. If a teams doing well folk watch them, simple.I dont hear Barrow complaining about  way rugby league is these days, Your a side on the up, newly promoted and looking for averages over 2000.Are your fans  staying away because we have a french team in or we giving 3pts ?
If you were top of this divison for next 3 seasons and crowds pushed to 3000, win promotion and crowds suddenly back to 4-5000 are you going whinge about state of the game then ? I doubt it!
Widnes have sold record number of season tickets this year, despite no promotion, Other clubs also doing well.Dewsbury on for a record because they selling theirs for £40, some one had some sense to get it sponsored.
Of course free tickets and discounts are misleading.Huddersfield season ticket offer is very good i believe, Yet their average crowd figure is better than the hey day of the fifties. They must have brought new people to the game.
Its about marketting yourself well and having a decent side out on the field , rest on your laurels and teams are going pass you and your going slide backwards.
Teams are now trying raise their standards, new grounds instead of dumps.Would Haven care as much about a new stand if it didnt tick boxes for S/L?
Of course there will always be faults and ive agreed i dont like some aspects of the way game is being run.No promotion etc, doesnt stop me going games though.
The game is also getting expensive to watch, especially for families in these times. But some want blame everything and everyone and even the time of year the game is played for state of their own clubs.
