Hull Kingston Rovers have suspended second-rower Michael Smith after the New Zealander allegedly returned to training unfit and overweight.
The 29-year-old was left in Hull while the squad flew to Torremolinos for a week's intensive training.
Asked if Smith will play for the club again, coach Justin Morgan told the Hull Daily Mail: "That's up to him.
"We had a frank talk about the situation and it is up to him to reach the standards I want from him."
Smith, a former Castleford player, had returned from New Zealand for the new season later than expected due to personal reasons.
He joined St Helens in October 2004 but quit the following January after making just one appearance, in the friendly against Leigh.
