French expansion possible - Lewis

Rugby Football League executive chairman Richard Lewis says there could be a second French team in Super League when it expands to 14 teams in 2009.
"One of the best things last year was the sight of so many English supporters coming to France for away games against the Catalans Dragons," he said.

"A decision will be taken about having 14 clubs in Super League by 2009.

"Of course, one of the things under consideration is having another French team in Super League."

Toulouse, who lost out to the Catalans Dragons for a place in the Super Leauge, are one of the clubs hoping to be given the green light.

Dragons head coach Mick Potter has welcomed proposals to include a second French club in Super League.

"It would be great to have another French team in Super League, whether it is Toulouse or someone else," he said.

"I think it would be good for rugby league, because it's popular in France, and there is a good base down there in the south.

"The more success the Catalans have, the better it will be for French rugby league.

"If youngsters see Catalans doing well, they might want to start playing and then the national team will improve. This is especially important with the 2008 World Cup ahead

From what I understand, the RFL want Super League Europe (a clue there  ;) ) to be a pool of the best clubs from Europe, so they're going to include teams from any region where it's played (North England and South France).

They've not said here they're definitely going to include another French team (of which the most likely candidate is Toulouse), but if they believe Toulouse or any other French team would bring more to Super League (in terms of competitiveness, support, facilities, academy and finance) than all-but-12 of the English clubs then they'll get in.  That's how the franchise system will work, and any club from any country will be able to apply (as long as they exist of course - a Berlin Bratwursts RL in Super League isn't gonna happen any time soon).

This subject really really winds me up!! MR LEWIS LISTEN UP!! There are clubs all over the UK that could give SL a good go if you could be bothered to look past SL and France.. Rugby League seems to be focused around the North West and Yorkshire.. why not get some money put behind the teams in Cumbria and Wales and maybe even Scotland!! I really hope Catalan come bottom every year!!
Can't stand Jam, eh!

Catalans will come bottom every year but there exempt from relegation up until 2008! 2009 franchise comes into play with no relegation after that so there sl place is guaranteed surely not a coincidence!!!!! its a joke
