Under 23 against Whitehaven
Monday 14th March 2011
Story in brief:
Danny Moran touches down for Fax
The Fax under 23 team got their league campaign off against Whitehaven, last years Grand Finalists, not as hoped at the Shay but at the Old Crossleyans ground in front of a reasonable crowd of supporters.

Martin Gonzalez, the Coach pretty much only had a team of 18 including a couple of 16 year olds, to select from given the fact that the amateur season is still running and many of our hoped for players still have local committments to fulfill before they can consider joining Fax.

However the team made a really strong start, Danny Moran scoring a try under the posts after 6 minutes with a conversion by John McCoy.  However that was the team's only contribution to the scoreboard as Whitehaven put on the pressure adding 22 points before half time, although two of their tries were seen as forward passes by just about everyone in the ground apart from those that matter, the officials.

Just before half time a particularly hard lift and drop tackle resulting in Whitehaven losing a player to the sin bin for 10 minutes, and after play resumed in the second  half with Whitehaven still having 12 men, a length of the field movement led to Fax's second try from Sela Tala.   But following an off the ball incident in which Fax loose forward, James Jackson ( son of Former GB hooker Lee Jackson) was felled and was taken to hospital with a suspected broken jaw, Whitehaven established their superiority and finished the game 40-26 winners

For a side which has only played together three times so far the signs are encouraging. There is a definate team spirit building and once the lads start to gell as a unit it's looking good for the future.
For Fax Danny Moran Chris Sykes, Pete Murphy and Jon McCoy caught the eye but it was a good all round team performance on which coach Martin Gonzalez can build upon.
Winners MAKE it happen, losers LET it happen!
