It has been no secret within the rugby league rumour mill that Mattinson’s former club Haven would dearly like to re-sign the highly-rated star.
And News & Star Sport understands that Mattinson signed a contract for 2013 with Whitehaven, on September 1. But he then decided against rejoining the Recre outfit and signed a new deal with Workington at the beginning of this week.
Town chairman Dave Bowden released astatement on behalf of Workington Town which said: “Graeme Mattinson is a Workington Town player and has re-signed for us in line with RFL regulations.” He refused to comment further.
And aWhitehaven spokesman said that Graeme Mattinson signed for Haven on September 1 for next season.
They declined to make any further comment.
A representative of the RFL told News & Star Sport: “Clubs can approach players who are coming out of contract and players can talk to clubs as from September 1. Any contact prior to that wouldbe regarded as an illegal approach.
“The RFL’s registration manager Chris Thair will be speaking to all parties
