I am pleased to announce the RFL has agreed a deal that will see the BBC continue to televise the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup and highlights of the First Utility Super League until 2020. The deal ensures the BBC will continue to broadcast seven live matches in total (from the sixth round, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final) for the duration of the contract. The Super League Show will also continue to be broadcast, along with the First Utility Super League Play-Off and Grand Final Highlights. Radio 5 Live will also continue to broadcast live matches from the First Utility Super League and Ladbrokes Challenge Cup, in addition to increased magazine content for the duration of the agreement.
As part of the new agreement the BBC will also employ a dedicated Rugby League correspondent, to work with the RFL and Super League, to support cross platform content to benefit the BBC audience and achieve maximum profile for Rugby League. This is a significant move that reflects the parties’ mutual desire to work together to exploit the many opportunities that exist across all of the BBC’s current and future media platforms to promote Rugby League and grow our audience.
I sincerely believe that with the above announcement and developing partnership with Ladbrokes, the future of the Challenge Cup is particularly bright. It is a competition with a unique and valued heritage, and we can look forward to its continued growth and success.
