Well said Derek, not everyone is lucky enough to have gotten into Sellafield before their educational clampdown.
Not everyone can afford to go every week, regardless of how well or poor the team is performing.

Can you elaborate on the educational clampdown comment please Puppetmaster?

Once over you had a chance of getting in there on experience, now it appears you need to be a virtual genius to wash somebody's socks!!!
[/quote] Correct I was lucky 14 years back  coming out of one long term job right into a job on site nowadays all the new starters seem to need A levels and degrees and they've gotta go thro intense 13 week training courses where if they fail they're out

Not getting into Sellafield when I was 16 was the best thing that ever happened to me. Maybe I was lucky to be unlucky.

When I left school, over 30 years ago, if you wanted a job at Sellafield there were minimum qualifications then, but if your dad, mam, cousin or Uncle Tom Cobbly worked there then the all that minimum qualification stuff was thrown out of the window (just like Marchon, Smiths etc). The world has changed, Sellafield rightly or wrongly are under the spotlight (parliamentary enquiries etc) its quite right that they have minimum standards and enforce them, they need the best people they can get and the first test of that is what qualifications you have got.

Totally untrue and unfounded comment.
I have chaired over 200 external operator interviews in the last 2-3 years and we select on a number of criteria, one of the main criteria having practical work experience in addition to the grade C in maths English and science.
There are some schemes eg TSTS and scientific apprenticeships which do require higher level of qualifications as they are generally aimed at technical specialist environments. We have taken a couple of hundred non a level and non degree qualified employees.
