(1) You risk a poor start like we have had
(2) Fans optimism disappears
(3) You lose financially on gates
(4) they arrive late and take 5-6 games to settle in by which time the season is half over and your out the first competion
(5) they have missed preseason training

I can not for the life of me see a benefit of leaving signings to the last minute.

what goes on in the close season regarding signing players or does nobody bother because we are never prepared like other teams for the coming season

We took 10,000 to Blackpool? I must have missed that stag do? Was he a popular guy then? The last place we took over 10,000 was in 1957 to the semi final against leeds
